Penny Lane

Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever were the first two songs recorded for Sgt. Peppers. Penny Lane was recorded in 9 sessions between December 29, 1966 and January 17, 1967.
Brian Epstein and EMI were pressuring the boys for a new single so Penny Lane was released as one side of a double A 45 with Strawberry Fields on February 13, 1967 by Capitol Records and four days later by Parlophone.
In 1967 the Beatles had an iron rule that singles were never included on their albums. So both songs were left off of their masterpiece.
George Martin said that was the biggest mistake of his career.
